Prototyping Academy

for the temporally divergent who are temporarily convergent

Failure Archive

Register PA/ARC · Recovered schematics and prototypes of record

The Academy keeps a complete record of its failures, as no other record is available. Each entry is plotted from the recovered material at the time of retrieval. Where the local record disagrees with the Host, the local record is printed beside him. He has not objected; he has not been asked.

Recovered schematics

Recovered prophetic schematic: the pop-up arrest, after US 1,394,450 (1921) 10 12 14 16 Recovered prophetic schematic US 1,394,450 · 18 Oct 1921 · C. P. Strite Matrix · machine-sectioned prohibited on the Host's worldline (D2) Carriage spring · stores the arrest Clockwork escapement times the exposure Release · ejects the matrix before divergent overshoot
PA/ARC/01 The pop-up arrest, 1921. Recovered in full. The Host regards its author as a prophet, and its spring as scripture. See PA/Cy08/0063.
The so-called alloy (D1): a nickel-chromium wire wound on a mica card, with its oxide scale in section The so-called alloy (D1) US 811,859 · 6 Feb 1906 · a patent is a piece of paper Ni 80 / Cr 20 · ρ ≈ 108 µΩ·cm so they say "self-healing" scale burns, and is not consumed Mica former · the only honest part Perpetual motion, in a toaster. "Calorite" (1908), "Kanthal" (1931): the copies.
PA/ARC/02 · D1 The so-called alloy. A wire that glows in open air and is not consumed. The Host has not opened one of their toasters. He does not need to. See PA/Cy07/0058.
The forbidden sectioning engine (D2): a loaf passing a gang of parallel blades The forbidden sectioning engine (D2) first commercial use · 7 Jul 1928 · Chillicothe, Missouri Uniform planar sections no servant required Proteinaceous matrix Interdicted 18 Jan 1943 rescinded here 8 Mar 1943 never rescinded there
PA/ARC/03 · D2 The forbidden sectioning engine. Prohibited under the Interdict. Observed here in open use, in bakeries, without shame. See PA/Cy08/0063.
The first apparatus of commerce, 1909: an open element standing between two wire racks, after the GE D-12 The first apparatus of commerce, 1909 after the GE D-12 · recovered Cycle 10 Element bare to the air wound, they say, with the so-called alloy One face at a time turned by hand · unilateral Second rack for a second slice, also one face at a time No arrest mechanism. No carriage. The operator watched, and turned, and judged. Not uniform toast. A prophet, deceived.
PA/ARC/08 The first apparatus of commerce, 1909. Bare element, open air, no arrest, one face at a time. Wound, it is claimed, with the so-called alloy. The Host regards its maker as a prophet who was deceived. See PA/Cy07/0058.

Prototypes of record

Transit prototype, Cycle 2: a locomotive through a station wall, after the Montparnasse derailment of 1895 Transit prototype · Cycle 2 arrest mechanism absent Arrest · by facade the wall, then the street Record: Paris, Gare Montparnasse, 22 Oct 1895. The express overran the buffer stop. The Host claims the train. The record does not support him.
PA/ARC/04 · Cycle 2 Transit prototype. Arrest mechanism absent. See PA/Cy04/0017.
Polysaccharide containment failure, Cycle 3: a burst storage tank, after the Boston molasses flood of 1919 Polysaccharide containment failure · Cycle 3 the matrix was not contained Seam failure · steel too thin no hydrostatic test on record Record: Boston, 15 Jan 1919. About 8,700 cubic metres of molasses. Molasses is mostly sucrose, a disaccharide, not a polysaccharide. The Host is unmoved.
PA/ARC/05 · Cycle 3 Polysaccharide containment failure. The matrix was not contained. It was also not a polysaccharide (Retraction PA/Cy03/R1).
Resonance miscalculation, Cycle 5: a suspension deck twisting in wind, after the Tacoma Narrows bridge of 1940 Resonance miscalculation · Cycle 5 coupling achieved in the wrong structure Torsional mode · deck edges opposed wind ≈ 64 km/h Record: Tacoma Narrows, 7 Nov 1940. Not simple resonance: aeroelastic flutter, a self-excited twist fed by the wind itself. The Host prefers his word.
PA/ARC/06 · Cycle 5 Resonance miscalculation. Coupling was achieved in the wrong structure. See PA/Cy04/0017.
Thermal oversight, Cycle 6: a burning rigid airship at its mast, after the Hindenburg of 1937 Thermal oversight · Cycle 6 divergent overshoot, at scale Lift gas · hydrogen · lower flammable limit 4 % Record: Lakehurst, New Jersey, 6 May 1937. Hydrogen lift gas. The ignition source is still argued; an electrostatic spark is the leading account. Not a toasting fault.
PA/ARC/07 · Cycle 6 Thermal oversight. Divergent overshoot, at scale. See PA/Cy04/0017.

Censored Fig. 4 · Nuptial display, commercial lek, Cycle 9 female in ceremonial shoes and stilts · display plumage raised Attendant · mate guarding Drawn from observation. No specimen is identifiable. The Academy does not approach a guarded female during display, and asks that you do not.
Fig. 4 Nuptial display at the commercial lek. Headlamps censored at the request of no one. See PA/Cy09/0071.
Fig. 6: female specimen, fully disrobed (front clip removed), in a private nesting structure. The exposed engine bay is obscured. Fig. 6 · Female specimen, fully disrobed front clip removed · private nesting structure Obscured by the Academy garments, set aside The platinum gland lies further aft and is not shown. The Academy publishes no anatomy of the gland. It petitions; it does not instruct.
